What will my health care provider say about me hiring a doula?
(Is this way too radical for me? Will the medical staff discourage this?)

BABI doulas have an excellent reputation around Boulder County. Many of the doctors and nurses in town know us and put our brochures in their waiting rooms. Some doctors will even recommend a patient hire a doula before the patient brings it up!

Having a doula does not mean you'll get less attention or 'the cold shoulder' from your medical care providers. It does not mean you are unwilling to negotiate or use medical interventions when necessary. It does not mean you have to go natural.

We continually work towards building communication and rapport with the medical staff and educating them about what we do (and don't do). We are experts at helping you communicate with them in a positive way, always keeping your preferences in mind. We also help them communicate with you, if there is a recommendation that you are not comfortable with. We remind you which questions to ask. We assure you we have no agenda but yours!

All sorts of people hire doulas.... those who know they want an epidural, are birthing at home, have high risk pregnancies. We aren't just for those wanting to forego medications and interventions. We do like to discuss the risks and benefits of things that might come up in labor during your prenatal visits, so you can make informed choices.

We work to help you make the best choices for you in your particular labor and birth. We are always happy to meet and discuss any questions or concerns your care provider may have about you hiring a doula for your birth.
